Dispersant NNO in Leather Processing

Dispersant NNO is an anionic naphthalene-sulfonate condensate that can be evaluated as a dispersion aid in selected leather-processing formulations. It may help distribute compatible dyes, pigments or other particulate chemicals. NNO is not, by itself, a complete tanning agent and should not be described as replacing the primary tanning chemistry.

Where NNO May Be Evaluated

NNO Is Not the Primary Tanning Chemistry

Tanning stabilizes the collagen structure through defined tanning agents and controlled processing. NNO may assist dispersion in some formulations, but it does not establish that stabilization function on its own. Chrome, vegetable, synthetic or alternative tanning systems each require their own chemistry, process control, safety and wastewater review.

Compatibility Variables

  • Leather type and stage of processing.
  • Dye, pigment, tanning and retanning chemistry.
  • Bath pH, temperature, salt concentration and float length.
  • Water hardness and dissolved metals.
  • Interaction with cationic fatliquors, fixing agents or other auxiliaries.
  • Order of addition and local concentration during dosing.

Because NNO is anionic, incompatibility or precipitation can occur with some cationic components. Test mixtures at process concentration before bulk addition.

Laboratory and Drum Trial

  1. Use representative hides or skins and the complete production recipe.
  2. Prepare a control and several low NNO addition levels on an active-solids basis.
  3. Observe bath clarity, deposits, foam, exhaustion and pH behavior.
  4. Evaluate shade, penetration, levelness, surface cleanliness and handle.
  5. Check physical properties and fastness required for the finished leather.
  6. Assess interactions during subsequent fatliquoring, fixing and finishing.
  7. Measure wastewater-relevant parameters for the complete recipe.
  8. Confirm the selected condition in a controlled production drum.

Chemical Restrictions and Wastewater

Review the current SDS, customer restricted-substance list and destination requirements. Evaluate wastewater color, chemical oxygen demand, salts and treatment compatibility for the entire recipe. Do not claim metal removal, lower chromium discharge, improved biodegradability or universal compliance without process-specific analytical evidence.
