Lignosulfonate used as binder

Lignosulfonates are used as binders in well-paper, particle boards, linoleum flooring, coal briquettes, and road construction.

As an inexpensive binder component, lignosulfonate is commonly used in coal briquettes, ceramics, mineral-dust briquetting, and the production of plywood or particle boards. Its ability to retain moisture and suppress dust also makes it useful in construction work, gravel roads, airports and sports facilities. In animal feed, lignosulfonate is used as a pellet binder to help improve feed properties. Lignosulfonate also has the ability to keep micronutrients in solution, which is useful for micronutrient transport and in some water- and soil-treatment applications.

Application Areas

1. Animal feed pellet binder — increases pellet bulk density, helps prevent de-mixing of ingredients, and can support feed intake.

2. Coal briquette binder and metal powder binder — a typical formulation adds lignosulfonate binder at around 5% of the concentrate. The concentrate is mixed and dried after binder addition, then briquetted. Industry reporting on copper briquetting with lignin-based binders describes resulting briquettes with good strength, reduced breakage during transport to the furnace, and minimal dust generation during transport or combustion — these are reported industry results, not a guaranteed specification, and should be confirmed for the specific feed material and process.

3. Limestone granule binder — used to granulate lime for reduced dust when applied in agriculture.

4. Ceramics binding agent — ceramics are shaped while wet, then dried and fired to achieve the desired strength and durability; lignosulfonate binders are reported to increase dry-strength in this process.

5. Fertilizer binder — used in granulating NPK and other chemical fertilizer blends, where it can also contribute to a slow-release effect.
