Lignosulfonate is an anionic, water-soluble polymer with surface-active and dispersing behavior. In industrial formulations it may function as a dispersant, wetting aid, stabilizer or binder, but it should not be treated as a direct replacement for every conventional surfactant.
Potential Functions
- Wetting and dispersion of compatible mineral, pigment or carbonaceous particles.
- Stabilization of aqueous suspensions through adsorption and electrostatic effects.
- Support for grinding, granulation, pelletizing and dust-management formulations.
- Blending with other anionic or nonionic additives after compatibility testing.
Recommended Evaluation
Screen several additions on an active dry-solids basis. Measure wetting time, particle-size distribution, viscosity, sedimentation, foaming, filtration, electrolyte tolerance and storage stability under the actual pH and temperature conditions. There is no universal addition rate across concrete, dyes, pesticides, minerals and drilling fluids.
Limitations
Natural brown color, molecular distribution, reducing sugars, ash and salt content may influence formulation performance. Cationic ingredients, hard water and high electrolyte levels can cause incompatibility. Renewable origin alone does not prove regulatory acceptance, non-toxicity or environmental superiority.
