Sodium Lignosulfonate

Sodium lignosulfonate is not a synthetic polymer built up from separately extracted lignin — it is recovered as a byproduct of the sulfite wood-pulping process, in which sulfonation happens in-process rather than as a separate downstream step. The main stages are:

  • Sulfite pulping: Wood chips are cooked with a sulfite/bisulfite pulping liquor (sulfurous acid and a base such as sodium bisulfite for the sodium-base process). This liquor breaks down the bonds holding lignin to cellulose while simultaneously sulfonating the lignin, converting it into water-soluble lignosulfonate as the cellulose fibers are freed for papermaking.
  • Separation from spent liquor: After pulping, the cellulose fiber is separated out for paper production, leaving the lignosulfonate dissolved in the spent sulfite liquor along with sugars and other wood-derived byproducts.
  • Recovery and concentration: The spent liquor is processed (e.g., by evaporation, fermentation to remove sugars, and/or membrane/ultrafiltration techniques) to concentrate and purify the lignosulfonate fraction to the target grade.
  • Drying and finishing: The purified lignosulfonate solution is spray-dried to a powder or supplied as a liquid concentrate, depending on the grade.

Because sulfonation occurs during pulping rather than as an added chemical step, sodium lignosulfonate is best described as a lignin-derived co-product of the pulp and paper industry rather than a purpose-built synthetic polymer. Grade, purity and performance characteristics can vary with the specific wood furnish and pulping/recovery conditions used at a given mill.

Sourcing

Sodium lignosulfonate production is concentrated in regions with significant sulfite pulping capacity and wood fiber supply, including parts of Asia, Europe and North America. Buyers should confirm the specific grade, TDS/COA and production origin with their supplier rather than assume uniform specifications across sources.
