Calcium Lignosulfonate Solubility in Water

Commercial calcium lignosulfonate grades are designed to disperse or dissolve in water, but solution clarity and residual insoluble matter vary by grade. “Water soluble” does not mean every grade produces a perfectly clear solution at every concentration.

What Controls Dissolution

  • Product grade, lignosulfonate distribution and insoluble-matter specification.
  • Water temperature, hardness, pH and dissolved salts.
  • Powder addition rate, agitation, concentration and mixing time.
  • Other formulation ingredients and their order of addition.

Recommended Preparation Procedure

  1. Charge clean water to a suitable mixing vessel.
  2. Start moderate agitation and add powder gradually to avoid lumps.
  3. Mix until the solution is visually uniform; allow time for entrained foam to release.
  4. Check pH, visible sediment and screen or filter residue at the intended concentration.
  5. Run compatibility and storage tests with the complete formulation.

Do Not Use a Universal Solubility Number

Published values can use different temperatures, concentrations and test methods. Purchase control should therefore use the applicable grade TDS and an agreed water-insoluble-matter limit, supported by the batch COA.
