Calcium Lignosulfonate Formula: Why There Is No Single Molecular Formula
Calcium lignosulfonate is a family of calcium salts of sulfonated lignin fragments, not a single pure compound with one fixed molecular formula. Short formulas shown in catalogs are useful identifiers or simplified repeat-unit representations, but they do not describe every molecule in a commercial grade.
What the Material Contains
The product contains lignin-derived aromatic structures bearing sulfonate, hydroxyl, carboxyl and other oxygen-containing functional groups, with calcium acting as a counter-ion. Molecular size, functional-group distribution and inorganic content vary with biomass source, sulfite-pulping conditions and downstream processing.
Formula, CAS Number and Specification Are Different
- Formula: a simplified chemical representation, not a complete commercial specification.
- CAS number: an identity reference for the substance family; it does not define grade quality.
- TDS/specification: the purchasing document for properties such as lignosulfonate content, moisture, pH and insoluble matter.
- COA: the batch-specific test results supplied with a shipment.
Why a Fixed Molecular Weight Is Also Misleading
Commercial lignosulfonates have a molecular-weight distribution. A single molecular-weight figure without the analytical method and distribution data should not be treated as a universal product constant.
What Buyers Should Request
For qualification, use the agreed grade specification and COA rather than accepting a purchasing decision based only on a formula. Review the structure and functional groups, the properties guide and the formal product page.
